I understand you were speaking of a pure 3-roll v. 3-roll position, with no potential misses for either side, in stating that a 3-roll v. 3-roll position is a huge pass. Practically, most 3-roll v. 3-roll positions are not pure. I would guess no more than 20% of 3-roll v. 3-roll positions are pure. If that is correct, at least 40% of 3-roll v. 3-roll positions are anywhere from a small drop to a take and,at most, 60% are huge drops.

In Phil's problem, it is a very small double, even though he loses his market so often on the next shake, because his position will very frequently lead to one of the 40% mentioned above, when no double is rolled by either side. If his position were likely to lead to a pure 3-roll position, it would be a large blunder to not double.
