In Response To: About Time...and rolling (Chuck Bower)

I think Jason is only talking about the incremental belly-aching, to which he anticipates having to listen if e-dice are brought in. So if you want to argue about what he's saying, tell him he can cover his ears, hide under the carpet, and refuse to listen!

But the real problem is unlikely to be the inability of programmers to produce random, or pseudo-random close enough to truly random, e-dice. I think even my antique HP15C, which I keep in climate-controlled lockdown storage*, can do an adequate job of it. The real problem will be suspicion of hacking. People have hacked real dice with magnets, but those can be detected. How do you detect hacking when all you see is a small sample of numbers coming out of a silent box? The sample during a match or tournament would be insufficient to detect, say, three additional jokers interspersed by remote control into one player's rolls in an 11-point match.

That possibility wouldn't bother me if someone brought homemade e-dice to a small local tournament. We used e-dice in the Columbus chouette maybe 6-7 years ago whenever the player who made the box brought it, and none of us worried for a nanosecond that it wasn't random enough for our purposes. But would I want to use such a dice-device brought by my opponent (or anyone) in the finals of a major tournament? Noooooo way !!

*Not really, but I probably should LOL
