What makes Monte Carlo a "World Championship"

I suppose one could argue that it's a tournament for the wealthy; a modern version of the old tournaments in the Bahamas of the 60's. On the other hand, it does attract some of the better players because of the elevated prize money. I do think it should alternate between North America and Europe as the travel costs can be prohibitive. I do have a hard time believing it's the best field when I don't recognize most of the player names. Maybe a true World Championship is the one tournament that should be seeded by a committee based on a criteria of past performance. Does anyone know how many of the "Giants" are attending?
