In Response To: Baffle Box Rules/Monte Carlo ???? (Seth)

Though all of the tournament people in Monte Carlo are tremendously nice, they are not very good on posting, explaining, and enforcing the rules. There are many, many infractions and problems as a result. For example, they do not play legal moves but many people pick up their dice too soon or adjust them improperly; they use baffle boxes a lot, but don't enforce or explain the rules of their use; people take long, excessive and too many breaks. I was in a match with a Russian (nice kid) and he was thinking about a redouble when he was way ahead in the match and it would have been a terrible redouble. After the game his friend said something in Russian which I could tell was about the game, and I said, "He told you it was not a redouble, right?" And he said yes, that is what he said. And I nicely explained that in any language that is not fair, because the same thing applies the next game and the next if we continue, and I also explained that speaking in Russian during the match was simply not polite, even if they were talking about the weather. The friend took offense, while my opponent apologized and was nice about it and we continued without incident.

Later the "friend" told me that everyone talks about plays and cubes with friends during the match and he said he checked with the TD and he said it was okay.

It does surprise me that at any important tournament anywhere the rules are not properly explained and enforced.

That is not to say I didn't enjoy the tournament, as each of us has a responsibility to know the rules and if your opponent isn't doing something right or fair, then you can call the TD.

In another incident, one of my students was put into a horrible position. His opponent was very late and was supposed to get 3 penalty points, and the TD walked over to my student and said he could have 3 penalty points if he wanted them, but if he wanted to be a nice guy he could waive the penalty.

No good TD should ever put a player in this position! The penalty is a must to keep the integrity of the game and the rules. Of course my student, at his first major tournament (he lives in Africa), simply agreed to waive the penalty.

I can give many more examples.

This is why I respect an MFIC (Patrick Gibson) and a Chiva, and Jeb, and, dare I say it, Rory, who know the rules and enforce them.
