Thanks for this but it seems like we didn't miss a lot.
Many of the ad hoc commentataries have worked out but this one stumbled. Tourney organizers need to line these things up intentionally.
It seems like the players are trying to stand up and make things happen on their own initiative which is fantastic, and appreciated but it's very hard if they aren't prepared with equipment, player bios, or the knowledge in advance that they will be asked to present.
I suspect Gus might have been better prepared if he had known he would be asked to provide commentary for the finals and the set up and logistics were last second.
I can't remember the last time I watched so much great backgammon. This is a fundamental change from just a few years ago. Streaming video has provided a forum for us to see great open play and the quality of the product video is quite good.
Figuring out how to take it to the next level is the challenging part for people who are unable to generate significant revenue from it. Youtubers are making a sustainable living from their channels via advertising revenue and vendor swag.
Only a couple of the players, organizers have found ways of establishing cash flow from their assets. If there were a youtube type channel for backgammon what would the advertisements look like? What kind of hits could it generate?
Matches tend to be long so the viewer is committed to viewing. Commercials? Vendor Sales? If breaks could be planned or videos edited.. Mid match analysis, training, guests, book and board reviews could be done to promote the game, the vendors, players, authors etc...
USBGF seems to have pushed things forward but profitability/entreneurship needs to take it to the next level. Access to match video is critical or course but editing/post processing and integrating it into asset with a channel to the fans is still missing.....
Blathering of course but it seems that the don king / dana white of backgammon hasn't shown up yet.
