Backgammon Ace

Pretty silly application and here's why:

1.) It's what is known as a freemium game. While it's free to play, there are frequent ads for you to buy chips that are completely worthless, and also "Ace" which basically allows you to ask the computer what the best move is.

What's funny is that every time you play a game you have to pay some sort of "banker's fee" with these chips that goes absolutely nowhere, just a black hole to suck your play money with no justification.

2.) I guess the developers think it's perfectly fine that you can have a computer choose all your moves as long as you're paying for it. If you buy tons of "Ace", you can use it to summon GNU every move with no problem. Why don't I just set my phone beside my computer and put all my opponents moves into XG and have it play mine? After all, Backgammon Ace finds it completely legitimate so long as you have enough "Ace" to run it every turn (which, lucky for you, you can buy more of if you run out!).

3.) You can acquire "achievements" when you run in to certain positions, which make you feel special doing a certain type of play even if it's just a standard play. It's pretty childish and shows a lack of understanding of backgammon on the developer's side. Who cares if you made a banana-split play? If that's the kind of play that was required, so be it, you don't need some gold star to make you feel clever.

The focus on PR makes the online community kind of like a circle jerk, and those PRs aren't necessarily real anyways. As I said earlier, you can use "Ace" on all of your tough plays and shave it down to a half ass decent level. On the other hand, there is no implementation of a decision making "half-life" where decisions made ages ago count less than your recent decisions. XG uses this and it is only fair. As you progress, you want your PR to be representational of your current skill but with BG Ace all of the games have equal weight towards your PR.

Anyways, these are just some reasons why this app is vastly over-rated. It's flashy and cool and will give you a pat on the back when you have a three-anchor backgame, but it's not really worthy of serious consideration.
