Just Wondering...

I have been saying much the same thing these past few years. Now that almost all the best players play almost the same, watching two great players is very little different from watching XG play XG. It didn't used to be that way when people had different styles and opinions and we weren't sure what was the right play.

That is why, at the highest levels of play, I believe we need variations and ways to make the game more difficult, fun, mentally challenging, and interesting both to play and watch.

Speed gammon is a good one...at least it goes fast and players are under pressure to think fast.

Many of the other variations that change the game also do this...randomgammon, backgammon to lose, slot gammon, simborg gammon, challenge gammon, nackgammon, destroy, cancelgammon, sassongammon, bluff gammon, and pineapple bluff gammon, and match gammon would challenge even the best players in the world to use their minds and ingenuity differently and they are all really fun to watch.

Mochy and I had more people watching us, live and on line, when he spotted me the cube, than the finals of most tournaments. Because it was different and interesting to see what happens when you change the game that way and give one player a spot that is different. And it's interesting to see how a superior player changes his strategy against an inferior player, and visa versa (guess which one was the superior player).

I am NOT saying we need to change the basic game of backgammon....just have more interesting side events and challenging events for the top players.
