Of the opinions that have been expressed on BGO in the past, the most educated opinion was probably this one. It's still just an opinion, though, and the real test is what would happen if it went to court. But I doubt that that will ever happen in this particular case.

In the absence of a definitive legal answer, my gut feeling is similar to Stick's. On my website I have posted rollouts of positions from a couple of well-known backgammon books, but I have omitted the diagrams and positions IDs.
