In Response To: ruling on premature cubing (Stick)

There is a simple solution to this example from Stick, and all other ambiguous situations, and this is one of the reasons Jeb, Chuck and I felt that more comprehensive rules were needed to attempt to cover many of these kinds of things.

The solution is the overriding concept that when there is a question about the application of the rules, the ruling should tend to go against the player who instigated the action that caused the problem. So the guy who doubled after a cocked dice should be penalized should be not given the benefit of the doubt. He should simply have to double. Now, if I were the tournament director (and he should be called), I would make sure that the ruling "hurts" the offending player, and I would ask the other player if he would like his opponent to cube or not, and that is how I would apply the rule.

To me, this would be the fairest result.
