It's a fair question. Certainly this position could easily turn into a blitz even if one doesn't consider it a blitz yet. Sometimes I do categorize positions like this one as a blitz, but more likely I'd categorize it as a tempo hit. The difference in my mind is that in a position like this one, I'm primarily thinking in terms of consolidating my position, and only secondarily thinking about blitzing (if I get lucky). In a blitz, I'm primarily thinking about how to press the attack, and only secondarily thinking about taking care of the needs of my back checkers. Usually I consider it a blitz only if my winning chances are at least 60% and my gammon chances are at least 20%.
