In Response To: Šibenik Backgammon Quiz 2015. (Mislav Kovacic)

I finally got around to taking this one. Very nice, just as last year. (Why only 10 questions this year, though?) I got 6 out of 10. Of the four I got wrong, two I feel I "should have" gotten right, while the other two I still find difficult.

Some further comments.

1. I played 24/18 8/4*. This is one I feel that I "should have" gotten right. Part of the issue is that it's not so common for the opponent to have developed such a strong position while we have only played an opening 62, so it's a bit of an unfamiliar decision.

2. I played 24/20. Obviously, I considered the tempo hit since it was one of the options, but I thought that the direct approach of stepping up was better. Another one I "should have" gotten right.

4. I think it's worth mentioning that when the opponent has an anchor on the 5pt and another anchor on a lower point, filling in the 4pt or even the 3pt is usually valuable (especially if you can use a spare on the 6pt), even though it's making a point behind one of the anchors. I've been burned by this many times because I keep thinking that I should be making points in front of the anchors. That's true as far as it goes, but the spares on the 6pt can't be used to make more points in front of both anchors.

6. I hit. This one I still find difficult. I think it's not so much that 24/21(2) 6/3(2) "does two good things" but rather that making the 3pt is so strong since it uses those spares so efficiently.

7. Like problem 8 last year, I thought this one was "too easy," but I guess if people get it wrong then it isn't too easy.

9. This is the other one that I still find difficult. Even if he breaks his board it's not game over yet. He also wins a lot of gammons. It doesn't take too much more timing to turn this into a clear double.
