Rules of Thumb to avoid crunching?

When ahead in the race, try moving your back checkers up more often and earlier, even if it means leaving a shot. This especially so if you have a board advantage. Don't overdo it, if you have a play that improves your upfront position, do it. But from what you describe it seems that you delay escaping you back checkers too much when ahead.
Also good: story your games against GNU, and analyze your games where you crunch. Should also give you an idea about what goes wrong.
