Here's what I don't understand

Backgammon players will disagree on exactly how much XG needs to improve before it approaches the limit of perfect play, but I think it is fair to assume that there exists an unspoken consensus among experts that future bots will play better than XG2 by a non-trivial margin.
So, here's the part I don't get (I know, I have made this argument before, but I think it bears restating in the context of this thread.): How can it be rational to recognize the limitations of XG2 while at the same time embracing the validity of XG-generated MET values, rollout results, third-roll-checker-play rankings, take points, gammon values, etc., that are expressed out to 3, 4 or even 5 significant figures?
