How can it be rational to recognize the limitations of XG2 while at the same time embracing the validity of XG-generated MET values, rollout results, third-roll-checker-play rankings, take points, gammon values, etc., that are expressed out to 3, 4 or even 5 significant figures?

The short answer is that it isn't. People routinely treat bot results with more reverence than is rational.

The longer answer is that it depends on what you mean by "validity." We live in an uncertain world. Acting on the best information available doesn't mean that you are in denial about the uncertainty. It just means that you are, quite sensibly, not allowing yourself to be paralyzed by the lack of certainty.
