I don't play online, but I could see myself taking insurance in a situation where I feel that I'm at risk of getting steamed. Perhaps I really really don't want to lose this game and there's really only one way I can lose, and I know I'll get upset if it happens. By taking insurance, I at least get a payoff if I do lose.
By the way, I think there's a continuum between "rational" and "irrational" players. Most "rational" players are still not totally immune from the visceral reaction that "something is going on" when the opponent gets a run of good luck. Insurance is very tempting in such situations.
