I think what most most people fail to realize OtB in the original position is that the 'safe' play of breaking the board actually loses many more gammons. Your variant of course allows us to keep a five point board which is strong enough to dissuade the opponent from going after us so loosely and being successful compared to the original position.

In the original looking at both plays and the immediate rolls play there were be some rolls where since we kept the five point board with 16/9 the opponent will not hit immediately whereas if we had broken the board he would go after us immediately.
