Are ABT Tournaments a big deal?

Much googling later...
If my reading is correct ABT is or was essentially a points race for American backgammon players playing essentially locally run tournaments by clubs that register withwith Bill Davis to keep track of points.
There is no requirement to organize or direct a tournament in a specific way.
There is no money associated with this although there are some small prizes.
So unless I am missing something being an ABT tournament doesn't mean much at all although it is nice to keep track of who played and how often it does not denote that a tournament is official, sanctioned, etc.
Seems like there is still a bit of a gap between the creation of the usbgf and tournament sanctioning, player rating etc to be muddled through in the US. Here in Canuckistan we don't have such problems as there are no backgammon clubs to organize.
The actual number of people working to bring some level of legitimacy to organized tournament play appears to be extraordinarily small so none of this likely matters in any practical sense.
Someone please sort me out if I misunderstood.
Thanks Robert
