I use a variation of what Nack calls the Handy Count below. The minor difference is that for 6 to 9 I simply extend my fingers starting with the pinky and moving to the index finger (instead of touching them with the thumb, as Nack describes).

I thought I was clever when I "invented" this system years ago, but I've come across a number of "co-inventors" since then and haven't felt clever in years. ;)
