I think that the key to adding value in a book is describing the process of understanding positions in analysis and otb rather than just memorizing them.
Many books are nothing more than a collection of positions. Sometimes there is some trivial analysis but not much you can extrapolate into the game.
Robertie's best books (Advanced, Modern) when he was writing them attempted to establish means and methods of thinking about the game. Establishing the skills that take practice and thought.
Rollouts for Advanced and Modern for example provide nothing but more material to think about. In the places where there are errata it may be because the position is more complicated or mis-selected but the text that goes with it is still relevant and provides lessons that those of us who aren't playing sub-5 backgammon can learn a lot from. (again imo).
It seems to me that quite a few of the open class players don't realize how weak we intermediates actually are in the basic tools required to play well.
