In Response To: Backgammon player arrested for murdering wife (Sam Pottle)

Chuck makes a most valid point. In Rod's case, all any of us know is what we read and have heard, and I believe I have read everything and heard quite a bit, and unless there is information I have not heard yet, (and I am sure there is), everything seems to be what they call "circumstantial." Whether there is enough circumstantial evidence or other evidence to convict we will simply have to wait and see. In the meantime, it is human nature to form an opinion, but expressing an opinion publicly without first hand knowledge is unfair and dangerous.

Having said that, however, while I will not express an option specifically about Rod's case, I will tell you that I do have my own criteria to help me form my own opinion about whether a person is capable of murder or not, and for the benefit of my friends here on BGOnline, I will share my criteria with you.

Ask these questions, not just about Rod, but about anyone you know, and you may decide whether someone is capable of murdering his wife:

1. Is he a backgammon player? (This is a major warning sign.)

2. Is he a sore loser? (People who cry about their luck are clearly narcissistic, self centered jerks and possibly murderers.)

3. Does he shake his dice properly and move the checkers in an unambiguous way? (Honest people do this and are less likely to do dishonest things, like killing people.)

4. When he goes to backgammon tournaments, in addition to playing in the tournament, is he always looking for chouettes and side action? (A clear sign of a character disorder which can lead to criminal acts.)

and finally, what I consider a major "tell" if a person might be a killer:

5. Does he generally dress sloppy? (People who are happily married and care about their wife also take care to look nice so they don't embarrass their spouse.)

I admit that none of these have been proven scientifically, but I am pretty sure, from many years of observation, that if a person exhibits all of the above traits, there is a pretty good chance he is capable of murdering someone. Next time you are at a tournament, look around the room and see if you don't agree with me.
