Regarding giving away copies ...

When The Battered Butterfly came out I sent out roughly thirty copies to reviewers, with a cover letter in each case. If I could think of an angle (I was a "local" writer in Singapore, Las Vegas, Tucson, and Chicago) I mentioned it. How else does one market an independently published work? I imagine that most reviewers expect to receive free copies, so as bribes go, these would not go very far.

Nor did they. Out of thirty just two led to published reviews, one in Tucson, one in Pattaya, Thailand. (Both very nice.) I also heard from a man at the South China Morning Post, who told me I had been misinformed, he was not the book editor, but he really enjoyed Butterfly and was passing it on to the right man with a recommendation.

Next time I will ship copies with cocaine and hookers. ;-)
