Thank you. Any comments, edits, help would be most appreciated. The new form of electronic publishing means a book can be updated constantly and improved.
Wouldn't it have been wonderful if Robertie and Magriel could have done this and updated their books with the latest rollouts and information?
We all know their books are classics and that the basic principles are sound...but they simply didn't have the computer aids we have today to have better examples and to actually change some of their approaches.
Clearly the game is often less "pure" than it was in terms of always priming and we now know the value of blitzing and tempo hits and know far more about how to play back games and containment games.
And anyone who thinks we have "solved" backgammon is simply being arrogant...I think there was someone who wanted to close the patent office in the early 1900's because he said that nothing new of value could be invented?
I had the honor of spending the evening last night with Falafel, Jim Pasko, Michy, Malcolm and Arkady, and we went over 34 positions together that stumped me recently. I believe there was only 1 position these great players completely agreed on and were right, and other than that one, at least one of them, like me, made the wrong play. And these were some of the best minds in the game.
We have not solved this game by a long shot, and by the way, neither has XG.
