In the first position I see four candidates: (A) 8/4* 7/4 (B) 13/9* 7/4* (C) 13/9*/6 (D) 13/9* 13/10. (A) has the advantage of making a three-point board but otherwise it has several liabilities. It breaks the 8pt and 7pt, leaving blots there, it forgoes hitting the outside blot, and it leaves almost enough indirect shots to be a direct shot. I think it's better to hit 13/9* instead. After that I'm inclined to hit twice because the upside is so big, and safe/bold criteria suggest a bold play.

In the second position I'm not sure how to choose between the hitting plays but I like coming in on the 20pt because I'd like to anchor there, so I would try bar/20 13/9*.
