If I understand correctly, if a play isn't one of the top 32 plays in 1-ply then it won't be considered, regardless of how large you make the search interval.

The exception is that Xavier has implemented a couple of simple heuristics that will sometimes check further down the list for a play that is "different in character" from all the top plays, and bump it up the list. This is why the 32nd play is often some weird play that is much worse than all the others. I think of this as a "wild card" slot.

I don't think Xavier has made public exactly what the wild-card heuristics are, but perhaps one can come up with a heuristic that assigns the wild-card slot to something involving 9/7, rather than to 6/5 4/2 3/2. Of course the tricky part is that the heuristic has to be extremely simple to compute or else it will degrade the overall performance. Also it needs to be a good heuristic for all positions, not just this particular position.
