It's a New Year; Let's do Something New

Despite those who insist that backgammon is not chess, my belief is that the only hope for backgammon lies in the direction of chess. That's why I proposed something akin to the Grand Chess Tour—an invitational with a round-robin format.
Similarly, the backgammon celebrities of the future aren't going to be gambling personalities. Kasparov and Anand and Carlsen don't project a flamboyant gambling personality. They're geeks. That doesn't preclude them from being successful celebrities. As for the incomprehensibility of the game, chess is even more incomprehensible than backgammon, but any fool can watch to see if the human makes the "computer move." Even backgammon players who should know better are easily hoodwinked into thinking that they "understand" what's going on when a commentator glibly invents a post-hoc "explanation" of why the computer move is "correct," so it shouldn't be difficult to similarly hoodwink the general public.
