This is interesting Nack. I'm trying to think of the reason for this. Is is because the average roll pip count is around 8 and in the first three examples splitting would leave a man 8 or fewer pips away, and the last example leaves all the men 9 or more pips away, therefore less likely to be hit on a average roll and having 2 men to hit after an average roll from white?
