I, like you, am somewhat surprised why 8-6, 8-2 is so bad in position one and correct in position 2. I think the difference in the two positions is due to the fact that an attempt to go forward by leaving a blot is much more effective in position one because: (1) you have a better anchor, which means you get g'd less and you win more after being hit; (2) perhaps most important, your opponent has many more non-escaping numbers that play well in position 2. There are three jokers (1-1 and 2-1) and 5-3 and 5-2 are solid); (3)your opponent does not have an anti-joker in position 2.

In conclusion, you take greater risks, with less chance of success, when you leave a blot in position 2.
