Hitting, and then running a back checker, is clear. Otherwise, Blue will face four cracking numbers (55, 22, and 52) if he is lucky enough to have his opponent dance.

In the OP, as here, failing to run a back checker forces Blue to volunteer four cracking numbers. In both positions, Blue must duck those four rolls. Running, therefore, is correct in both. In the OP, Blue could not run a back checker using a 4. If he were going to run, he had to use the 6 for that. That precluded the hit. The difference in the variant above is that now Blue can both run and hit.
