I think you've basically got it. In the final variant, Blue is less likely to get hit (as a consequence of splitting), so he can better afford to take the risk that rewards him nicely when his double (direct) shots become triple shots, his singles become doubles, and his non-directs (consider White's 31 and 32) become singles.

If you feel like pursuing this further, a useful exercise is to count the number of times Blue is able to hit out of (36 x 36) = 1296, after each of the two plays. At first, use pen and paper if necessary. With practice, you'll find shortcuts and get faster -- it will become a tool you can use in such positions over the board. Even just doing it for this one position will give you a better basis of comparison.
