In Response To: NY Metro Open 2016 Recap/Review - Long (Albert Steg)

Upon registration, each player is given a simple half-sheet 'Welcome' document with a few helpful reminders that people are apt to forget, and told that they are responsible for reading it:

Good idea, and I've seen this at other tournaments (e.g. defunct Indiana Open), but it is rare.

Something similar happened at another ABT Ty this year -- the directorship changed the starting times for at least one event, resulting in it being inconsistent with the schedule printed in the brochure. Eventually this was resolved (after some complaints, I'm sure) be reverting to the schedule on the brochure.

To reiterate what Stick and Albert (and maybe others) have said, announcements, whether pre-event (e.g. at the Calcutta) or especially while play is in progress are NOT LIKELY to be absorbed by a significant number of players. I like the idea of verbally telling each player affected when s/he forks over entry fee that something is different, etc. That may be difficult to carry out with 100% efficiency but unusual circumstances require extra effort.

I have to disagree with Jake that directors typically aren't responsive to post-tournament critique. (Well, of course some are and some aren't.) For example, after last year's Texas Championships (in San Antonio, the sequel in less than a month!) several players told Bill and Tara that more time was needed for the Main event. They listened. This year the Main (at least the Open, I haven't paid as much attention to the Intermediate) will begin on Friday night.

Without looking back at previous years it appears (from reading ChiPoint) that the turnout this year was high, and especially in the beginner events. Lynn and staff are doing a lot of things right and I'm confident they will take constructive criticism under advisement leading to an even bigger, better event next year. It's been long overdo that the most famous city (don't know if it's still 'largest'....) in the US, and the one that in the past was clearly the cutting edge for backgammon made its way back towards the top of the list. Keep it up!
