NY Metro Open 2016 - Technical Challenges

I think we are all aware of the very difficult challenges which Michelle dealt with so brilliantly well at the tournament. She single-handedly set up and managed a multiplex of recording and streaming stations which required constant maintenance and adjustments, and made provision for expert commentary, whilst also making the environment smooth and comfortable to the players within the constraints of the tournament’s resources.
I was particularly impressed with the choice to provide a dedicated room for the streaming and recording stations. This enabled Michelle to plan out at extremely short notice a highly professional and reliable system for the technical components of the recording and streaming (stands, webcams, power cables, USB cables, computers, etc.). It would have been almost impossible for her (or anyone else) to manage several streaming/recording stations simultaneously if this was done in the main tournament room, or if the dedicated room became crowded with players engaged in non-recorded matches or kibitzers. I am well aware of these issues from my experience of regularly directing BMAB tournaments in the UK for between 16 and 24 players, where I have one or two assistants, unlike Michelle. Ad hoc technical layouts for more than 2-3 recording stations are recipes for disaster. I therefore applaud the very sensible decision to provide a dedicated room for the purpose of recording and streaming.
