A good maxim for general play is that if you have a blot in your homeboard, you should make it as soon as is reasonable. Other things have higher priorities, but generally, unless you are trying to walk home a race lead, then make it. If white should randomly decide to pop a checker into hitting range (direct or indirect), then you want to be able to hit it.
