My immediate intuitive play is the symmetrical 24/20 13/8. At this match score, it would appear logical to make the Gammon Go play whatever that is. Using the 5 to hit loose on the Ace looks like an ill balanced pre-emptive strike, giving the opponent great opportunities for anchoring or counter attacking. Therefore 13/8 is the only play I would consider with the 5. This leaves 24/20 or 13/9 with the 4. “Down” plays are almost invariably more aggressive than “Split” plays in terms of gammon winning percentages. If the “Down” and “Split” plays are close at equal match scores (including DMP or money), the more aggressive “Down” play is usually preferable at Gammon Go and other similar scores. In this position duplication of 4s is also a factor.

I feel sure that for money or DMP, 24/20 13/8 is the correct play. Are the additional match score considerations enough to justify the more aggressive 13/8 13/9? The answer to this is I am still unsure.

In these situations where I have a clear intuitive first choice, and further consideration of options do not convince me that there is a superior alternative option, I always try trust to my intuition. This isn’t always easy because I am often attracted to the flashy smartass play at the cost of ditching the reliable boring plays. I expect to lose equity from time to time with this general rule, but a lot less than when I ignore it. My preferred choice (educated guess dare I say )is therefore the solid 24/20 13/8.

Incidentally, is S-Hit the new notation for Split and Hit? If so, I think it is one I will remember.
