I think the countries where it is popular also value tradition more highly, and go is an important part of their history.
For example in Japan, during Edo period (between 17th - 19th century) there was an official position for the best go player in the land, called godokoro. Part of the responsibility was to be a personal go tutor to the shogun.
Compared to that, there is really not much to say about the place of backgammon in history (apart from the famous 'Alea iacta est' by Julius Ceasar of course)
