Doug Zare looked at this in one of his gammon village columns. I think he concluded that using .43 instead of .5 was a good guide.
I disagree with your conclusion of "The lesson here is that the ratio of extra net g's/extra losses has to be > 2/1 when the opponent owns the cube in order for a play that gives you more of each to be correct." That will often be the case but just because one position has more wins than another does not mean that cube power for it is more. There will be two different positions with possibly different volatility effects.
