With two honest players it should be perfectly possible to produce a random roll from the hand: shake the dice vigorously for a second or two, then give them a firm roll. The fact that we are not allowed to do this, and must use cups - lipped ones (where available) if either insists - is that not a presumption of guilt?

Not necessarily. While it's POSSIBLE to create reasonably random numbers by rolling dice by hand, it's harder to do properly. Perhaps the dice cups are in place partly to prevent cheating, but partly to help us create random numbers.

I emphasise that I merely stated that the using of headphones and/or opaque dice is not transparent behaviour. Surely you don't dispute that?

Why are you so sure? In fact, I do dispute that. I'm not aware of any instances of cheating with headphones, nor even any accusations of cheating with headphones. If an opponent puts on headphones, it doesn't even cross my mind to consider the possibility that they are cheating. Sure, it does to others, but not to me, so it's not "surely." I'm not sure it's fair to assume what I'm thinking.

Headphones are relatively new to the game so, for example, the BIBA Rule 1.5 which includes: 'Headphones can only be worn if opponent agrees.' seems perfectly reasonable to me, and there is no mention of having to give a reason. To me, sportsmanlike behaviour includes not only wanting a level playing field, but desiring this to be seen to be so by all parties (ie Transparency).

Maybe I do need to ask for a monitor for when you take a break and go drop a deuce. Would you be offended if I did?

The omission of 'I believe...' in my statement, though technically wrong is shorthand, and is surely not uncommonly employed?

You're probably right, it's commonly employed. I just didn't think it was transparent.

The bottom line is: I object to rules that allow my opponent to unilaterally prevent me from wearing headphones. I'm not cheating, nobody has ever accused me of cheating. This is not a deal breaker for me -- there are more important issues to get up in arms about.
