Thank you Chris for this comprehensive explanation.

I can see now that because of the very much reduced values at lopsided scores, there is not necessarily a general expectation that as the match progresses the value of the games will increase - it could go either way. Consequently, Bob appears to be correct in asserting that optimal clock management is not governed by match score considerations.

However, where a game becomes more gammonish or the cube value has been raised, the argument still holds in my opinion, and these are factors which should sensibly influence clock management.
