For lack of a better term, this is a holding game, but the reason I don't find the categorization straightforward is that it's not so common to own both the 21pt and the 17pt in a holding game. Moreover, White already has a straggler. The general strategy in a holding game is to hold the anchor and hope to hit a shot. If there are two points that could arguably be called "anchors" and if Blue has already hit a checker that might be contained, then the strategy isn't quite as simple.

Anyway, it wasn't clear to me OTB that it was time to break the 17pt, and it's still not clear to me why, given that I've decided to break the 17pt, I should prefer 9/8 to 6/5 since 6/5 duplicates White's 2's to hit. I guess maybe we don't care too much about getting hit, and 6/5 slightly misplaces that checker.
