To me, the biggest argument against a system based on results is that backgammon involves way too much luck for it to be of great value (unless you are comparing players that are no way near close in skill, and then you don't need a system anyway).

I think the ideal way of identifying how players rank would be some sort of rating list not based on who wins the match, but instead on the MWC cost according to XG, or something. Of course this is impractical as not all matches get recorded. IMO, what you are doing with BMAB is a good substitute, even though it doesn't capture the players' ability to play better in important situations and their ability to make the opponent play poorly. Over time, the BMAB list might become more prestigious than the Giant's list. I know some players who feel that way already.
