In Response To: Questionniare - list of different rating systems (Ken Larsen)

1) Elo should have a capital E. It is named after a person.

2) In comments for Elo you list that it should be restricted to live tournaments only. Why is that not also listed for the other systems?

3) Elo system accounts for difficulty of opponents and no data is wasted is a pro. Compared to L-S doing well at a tournament filled with great players would get rewarded even more as it should be.

4) Elo is used for many other types of contests and is familiar to many could be a pro.

5) For Larsen-Silliman you have that it limits effects of attendance as a pro. The Elo and PR/BMAB systems do that even better but do not have it listed as a pro. Furthermore the description of Larsen-Silliman explicitly mentions encouraging attendance as a reason for how it is devised.

6) A con for Larsen-Silliman and also Elo is that differing strengths of player pools could be problematic. For example, say the level of play is higher in country A than country B overall. Without enough mixing those systems would not be ranking players from country A higher.

7) Elo also places more weight on recent events.

8) For PR/BMAB it limits the luck factor but does not completely remove it. Some matches just have more difficult plays. Perhaps a better way to rephrase this pro is that it gives more reliable results based on limited data.

9) One of the biggest pros for PR/BMAB is not listed. Unlike Elo or L-S players from different playing pools may be fairly compared.

10) A con for PR/BMAB is not listed. Due to XG not being perfect, technical issues with how PR is calculated, and neglecting practical playing to opponents considerations, playing for a low PR is not the same as playing to win a match. Just how important this is is not known and there are differing opinions about it.
