In Response To: Is there a future for the Giants List? (Petko)

First of all, I too, want to thank Yamin and his team for all the work done with the Giants list for 22 years.

For 4 years now (Giants 2011,13,15) I've had growing doubts as to whether the Giants list remains good for BG. A major reason for this is that the animosity I see created by it and its process causes more ill feelings towards this game than any possible benefits from the Giants list. We see players on here cheerleading for their friends and countrymen which leads to accusations of excessive nationalism. Every time, we see players complaining that certain players aren't ranked high enough or complaining that there are no or few players from their country on the list. Again, some call this nationalism. This year we have concerns that several players from a certain country are ranked to highly and that some of them don't even deserve to be in the top 32. Does this lead to a good feeling for all? Of course not.

If I were someone considering coming into competitive BG or sponsoring some, would this thread entice me to do so? http://www.bgonline.org/forums/webbbs_config.pl?read=186823 I highly doubt it.

The BG world is far more connected now than it was two decades ago due to the internet. As a result, tourney results and ratings and national rankings are much more readily available now. I'll point out the USBGF ratings, Of course one's rating reflects whether he's been hot or cold for the past several events, but if you look at the winning percentage of players with a few hundred matches played and if you were to average their ratings over the past several years you'd have a pretty decent idea of whether that player was successful or not.

The ill feelings between players and even entire nations of BG players cause far more detriment to this game, than any meager benefit from the vote for Giants. It is unclear exactly what the criteria are to be judge worthy to be voted a Giant. On a worldwide scale it also isn't clear what the criteria are to be eligible to vote as some nations only have one division rather than several.

I was around BG for almost 20 years before there was a Giants List. BG got along just fine then, and it will get along just fine after Giants is abolished. Giants is no longer needed and certainly not worth the issues the voting and process cause. This issues seem to get worse every time.

Indeed, it is time to abolish the Giants List!
