Maya said: I respect the players that applied for BMAB certificates and achieved great PRs, but a Giant in Backgammon, in my opinion, should be a player who wins tournaments. In order to win a tournament you must not just play with a low error rate, you have to be able to quickly determine your opponent's weaknesses and to take advantage of them. The preparation before a tournament should not be just technical, it should be also tactical and psychological. Backgammon is a fight of energies and strategies. You will not win a lot, if you always use the same strategy in every match. I do not want to ask myself on every move " What would XG do here", I just want to win.

Bravo!! I could not agree more!

I have no doubt that PR is the best available metric we have today to judge player strength. And I'd guess most great and aspiring players seek to lower their PR. And I see nothing wrong with players wanting to be certified with various PR-based titles by BMAB or whomever.

Being able to play with a great PR to me is like an American football quarterback being able to throw a pass with a tight spiral. It's better to have this ability than to not have it, but you still have to line up and play and outscore your opponent if you want to bring home the trophy, don't you!
