Great arguments Matt.

Your point about error rate methodology only being able to measure the strength of a player within 0.2 is interesting and a reasonable estimate in my view. Even if we assume the error range is +/- 0.3, that is equivalent to an Elo rating error of only +/- 10 points. I doubt any further refinements to error measurement are likely to significantly reduce this range of Elo errors.

Finding the absolute perfect system of player performance is not really achievable, but that does not significantly devalue the best compromise systems currently available in my view.
