My take on the Giants list

To add to that, I have actually done such an experiment myself once. It was for a festive gathering at my kids' school, and one of the things was to guess how many small chocolates there were in a jar. (winner got the whole jar). The correct answer was 302, and I collected all the about 70 papers with answers afterwards to see what the average was. It was 299 point something, about 1% off.

I remember when reading about the wisdom of the crowd thing that an important assumption for it to work is that no voter knows how the others vote. Knowing what others think will create a bias in your own estimate. This assumption should mostly hold in a how-many-in-a-jar guess, and may or may not be true for the Giants voting.
