San Antonio 2016 (long)

As someone who spends quite a bit of time in San Antonio (my mom lives there) I can sympathize with some who might feel a little underwhelmed by the sight-seeing. I've always felt a little embarrassed by the River Walk, though I think they've made it better with the new 'Museum Reach' extension. I'd actually recommend taking a River Taxi up the Reach to San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) -- it's better if the River actually takes you somewhere you want to go rather than just floating around like it's Disneyland).
SAMA may not be impressive in the way that Chicago's Art Institute or MoMA is, full of European and modern masters, but they have an excellent and very entertaining Latin American wing that is region-appropriate (in a sense, Manet paintings in San Antonio make about as much sense as, well, having a Sea World there).
Having said that, the McNAY Museum does have a fine European/American collection, housed in a charming setting (you'll need a cab or Uber ride to get there -- just about 15 mins from downtown) -- it's well worth a visit and isn't so huge a place that you need all day there:

And now that I'm thinking of it, I am kicking myself for not asking Rory whether he took his daughter to the extremely wonderful, brand-new DO-Seum for kids:

In all seriousness, I went on a tour of this place *without* kids and wanted to stay all day -- though nothing beats St Louis's 'City Museum, San Antonio totally puts Boston's children's museum to shame. It's also a car ride -- maybe just 10-15 mins from the Menger.
I'd have to agree the Alamo isn't all that riveting unless you're way into the battle history. I find some of the old 'Spanish Missions' more compelling as regional destinations:

A 'mariachi mass' at the Mission San Jose would be a great thing to experience-- the timing would conflict with the backgammon tournament -- though if you had a really terrible week and flamed out of all the events, you could do this for consolation! You don't need to be religious to appreciate this!
