You're obviously not doing enough research nor straying quite far enough off the Riverwalk to enjoy all of the best San Antonio dining experiences.

Tara has assembled a great section on the www.texasbackgammon.com website on "Where to Eat" -- and she updates it each year. People should pay more attention to it.

Try, in no particular order, Boudro's (nice and on the Riverwalk), Soluna (short drive but incredible Mexican dishes), Bella on the River (superb, on the Riverwalk, quaint grotto setting, favorite of Scotty K, Carter, and others), Bohanan's (just off the Riverwalk, walkable from Menger, incredible steaks and service), Rosario's (classic San Antonio Mexican), Il Sogno Osteria (short ride, five star Italian), and anything in the 'Pearl' development on the Museum Reach of the Riverwalk -- Hotel Emma is worth seeing (the restaurant and bar are magnificent) and all the restaurants in the development are very highly regarded. And for a great down-home breakfast and most unique surroundings try Schilo's, only a couple of blocks from the Menger.
