Once upon a time Dirk and his buddy, Johannes Levermann, looked to to be the future of backgammon. They were probably the first two players to explode onto the scene in the blast from the bot revolution. I remember them getting their heads handed to them by Jim Hickey, playing an ace-deuce backgame prop where they made the mistake of trusting Jellyfish. A mere two years later Johannes won one of the most exciting duels in the annals of World Cup history when he downed Jerry Grandell in the first round.

This was a fateful match for the Chicago boys. Johannes went all the way to the final, where he lost to Howard Ring, while Jerry stopped me from a repeat win of the US Open when he beat me in the semis, after which he rolled over Neil.

Great to see that Dirk is still playing.
