"If you truly want to have a "world" championship that brings ALL the greatest backgammon players into a tournament that truly represents who is the worlds greatest then allow the world to attend, not just those who can afford it."

Do we really still think that the results of a single tournament truly determines who is the best player in the World? I think it is abundantly obvious that this cannot be the case no matter how much we would like it to be. Where the players are reasonably closely matched in skills, luck inevitably prevails.

Personally, I think the World Championships survive because of the romance and mystique linked to the venue and its long history of association with Backgammon. If the venue is changed, the romance and mystique will in all likelihood disappear and the tournament will just become another high profile tournament competing with several others
