Before Blue rolled, here is what I speculate both players were thinking:

Blue -- "I need to split my back checkers."

White -- "I want to make a homeboard point, particularly by using one of the spares from my 6-point."

Then Blue rolls 42. He has several split options, but which one foils White's plan? Take a look at how White plays his 36 rolls if Blue goes to the 18-point. Quite a few plays that hit leave direct shots, and many of the ones that hit but don't leave direct shots would have made the 5-point. And if White doesn't hit? Blue is happy with that, too.
