Something I noticed after posting my previous message is this: Once your opponent has made his 9pt, making his 7pt goes up in value. That gives him four points in a row.

In the OP, Blue may be ambivalent whether White makes the 20pt or 18pt. He does not like White making the 20pt because it is his best inside point. But he also does not like White making the 18pt because it gives him four in a row.

After White makes the 20pt, the 18pt remains as an important, sometimes hard-to-fill, gap in White's prime.
